As the world enters the final stretch towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the need to translate youth engagement into concrete action has never been greater. Responding to this call, the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) convened a high-level side event during the 2026 ECOSOC Youth Forum, reaffirming its commitment to empowering young people as key drivers of sustainable development across the Commonwealth.
Held under the theme “From Promise to Progress: Youth-Led Action for the SDGs,” the side event was organised by the Commonwealth Youth Council in partnership with the Governments of Sierra Leone and Ghana, alongside UNESCO and other stakeholders. The session responded to the urgent need to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by shifting the global youth development agenda from dialogue to delivery, positioning young people as active contributors to implementation rather than passive beneficiaries.
The side event also served as the official launch of the Commonwealth Volunteer Programme (CVP), a structured initiative designed to mobilise, train, and deploy young people across key development sectors, including education, climate action, health, peace and security, and economic empowerment. Through the programme, CYC seeks to strengthen youth participation in addressing development challenges while creating opportunities for young people to contribute their knowledge, skills, and leadership to sustainable development efforts.
The event took place during the ECOSOC Youth Forum, convened under the theme “Innovate, Unite and Transform: Youth Shaping the Road to 2030” from 14th to 16th April 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Forum brought together young people, Member States, the United Nations system, and development partners to exchange ideas, showcase innovative solutions, and strengthen youth engagement in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
By convening the “From Promise to Progress” side event and launching the Commonwealth Volunteer Programme, the Commonwealth Youth Council reinforced its commitment to ensuring that young people are not only represented in global conversations but are also equipped and empowered to drive the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals across the Commonwealth and beyond.
