CYC Marks World Oceans Day by Recognising Young Climate Champions

Young Beneficiaries of the Football for Socio-Economic Change initiative in Rwanda

To mark World Oceans Day, the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) recognised young people across the Commonwealth whose work is contributing to environmental protection and climate action.

Observed annually on 8 June, World Oceans Day highlights the importance of protecting the world’s oceans and the natural systems that sustain life. In line with this year’s theme, CYC used the occasion to share the stories of young leaders whose work is creating positive change within their communities.

One of those featured was Byiringiro Mugiraneza Olivier, of Umuri Foundation in Rwanda. Through his project, Football for Socio-Economic Change, football serves as an entry point for conversations around climate, agriculture and community development. Young people involved in the programme receive training in greenhouse farming and take part in environmental activities while developing skills that can support their future.

Olivier’s story was part of a wider World Oceans Day spotlight celebrating young people responding to environmental challenges across the Commonwealth. Although their work takes different forms, each initiative shows how local action can contribute to wider efforts to care for the environment.

Throughout the campaign, the Commonwealth Youth Council continued to amplify the voices and achievements of young people by recognising leaders whose work improves lives, protects the environment and strengthens communities across the Commonwealth.
