In February 2020, the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) took a bold step toward addressing climate change and promoting sustainable practices through an impactful project in Ghana. This initiative, led by Miss Abena Dugan, the CYC Vice Chair for Partnership and Resources, aligned with the Commonwealth Blue Charter’s call for clean water, sanitation, and environmental conservation.

The Project
Miss Abena Dugan spearheaded a series of workshops in senior high schools across Ghana to raise awareness about the importance of clean water, sanitation, and environmental preservation. These sessions engaged young minds in meaningful discussions on climate action and empowered them to take ownership of protecting their environment.
Actions Taken
The project didn’t stop at education. Practical steps were taken to instil sustainable practices, including:
- Donation of Cleaning Materials: Miss Dugan provided bins and cleaning supplies to the schools, enabling students to maintain clean surroundings.
- Tree Planting Campaign: Trees were planted on school campuses as a symbol of hope and a tangible step toward combating deforestation and climate change.
Collaboration and Support
The team at GoGreen Checkmate supported this impactful initiative, whose partnership amplified the project’s reach and success. Their contributions helped bring essential resources and expertise to the schools involved.
The Impact
The workshops inspired students to become environmental stewards in their communities. Donating cleaning materials improved hygiene practices, while the tree-planting campaign contributed to long-term ecological conservation efforts. These actions served as a practical demonstration of how local efforts can contribute to global climate goals.
